This novel was filled with believable characters that I cared about (that was the initial hook). I was compelled to discover their stories, had trouble putting the book down and didn't want the story to end. What has made the story stick with me, long after its ending, is the crafty plot line. The author masterfully laid out all the answers in plain view, helped me build a plausible case, and then surprised me in the end. Michael Cordell is a gifted writer and I look forward to reading more of his work in the future. Contempt” , a courtroom/ crime thriller by Michael Cordell available on Amazon. It is an interesting legal drama that will provide the reader with the kind of escapist drama one would see dramatized on Netflix( except it does not have explicit sexual scenes in it) or other cable streaming service. In fact as I read this enjoyable novel, I kept thinking of its adaptability to screen, it’s cinematic quality. Thane Banning an ex- attorney who dealt in real estate law, has just been freed from prison after five years, some on death row. He was convicted of murdering an Assistant DA, but freed on a legal technicality. Most people scorn him believing him guilty; even his wife suffers some doubt. But Thane is determined to prove he was framed, and he thinks he knows why and by whom- the “ tough on law” DA. The author does good work on giving the reader insight into the character of his primary character, which has been damaged by his years in prison. One lesson he learned well is that of someone hits you in the back, you hit him harder, but in the head. The book is about how Thane takes that advise and puts it into action. It all happens in the drama of another murder trial. A paroled petty criminal who Banning knew in stir is arrested for murder . He asks Thane Banning to represent him. Although he has never practiced criminal defense, Thane takes the case. It appears that , faced with the vindictive DA who sent him to death row, Thane is in way over his head, with inexperience causing him to loose badly . That puts you in the picture, but it is only the first reel . “ Contempt” is 21st century noir, with a conflicted, damaged hero, the wrong kid of motives, and the power of the state against him. It is also a true 2020 book, with a twisty finish that should please. I am not a lawyer, but I doubt that some of the courtroom stuff could ever happen in a real courtroom, but why let that stand in the way of a good tale. I enjoyed it, and recommend it as a good mystery for fans. For 99¢ you get more than your money’s worth. Rating of three stars, would have been four but for the courtroom stuff and the ending which needed the characters to reveal all in a strangely protracted to answer the main theme- who killed Thane’s wife and why.
