Starting at the end, was very dissapointing. Like the timer or page counter meant wrap it up.The writing, specially for the perps POV chapters, is way too padded. Way too much unnecessary descriptions, uninteresting and really hashing over the same points too much. Way too drawn out and as others wrote I found myself having to skim, it was that brutal. Details of no interest, two pages for something that should either have been left out or described in one sentence.These books show up for someone who likes say Michael Connelly but this is nothing like Bosch and the writing is somewhat juvenile. Characters aren’t consistent, and there is not much of that deduction, smart cop thinking in here at all. Irritating actually. Main character who is supposed to be really professional balking at teamwork that is bread and butter for them.I muddled through, and here and there was some interest and originality, but again dialogue and much of the story was just too pat, juvenile, What Lies Beneath is one of the most compelling books to date by these authors. This gripping story expertly weaves a terrifying premise into a larger tapestry of moral and emotional mine fields with horrific implications.The Violet Darger and Victor Loshak books cover topics ostensibly about serial killers and mass murderers, but they are also artfully painted against a backdrop of the paranoia of modern life so familiar to anyone living in the United States today. Those familiar with true crime will find the topics explored in this book to be frighteningly relevant.One of the things that drew me to these authors in the first place was their ability to tackle complex issues beyond the typical scary story level of entertainment, and this book is a perfect example of that. It’s exciting and scary but it’s also something that’ll challenge your assumptions about the reality of the world we live in and what kind of person you would actually be in this type of situation.I can't go into more detail without spoilers so I'll leave it at that.
